What are the features of Kindle 2, should you upgrade Kindle 1?

The most significant improvement of Kindle 2 over Kindle 1 is the addition of text to speech and WisperSync features.  With the text to speech feature, it can read books to you and also allow you to switch back and forth between text and speech modes without losing its place.  This feature is especially important for students who learn English as the second language, and for people who want to listen to audio-books during long commute.  With the WhisperSync feature, you can switch back and forth between Kindle readers and continue reading the same book without loosing your place (for example if you have a Kindle 1 and want to switch to a Kindle 2).

Additional improvements include:

  • Kindle 2 uses a  five-way controller button, which makes it far easier than the Kindle 1 at navigating newspaper sections and articles. The five-way controller also makes it a lot easier to select specific text, highlight it, and look it up in the built-in dictionary. The next page button on Kindle 2 is also much smaller than Kindle 1.0 which can prevent accidental turns of pages, a major complain in Kindle 1.
  • Slim and light weight:  just over 1/3 of an inch and only  10.2 ounces
  • Improved display: Kindle 2 uses 16 shades of gray for clear text comparing with only 4 shades of gray in Kindle 1
  • Longer battery Life: 25% longer battery life which can last days without charging
  • More storage:  holds over 1,500 books
  • Faster page turns: 20% faster page turns

Should you upgrade? If you really need the text to speech feature to learn English or to listen to audio-books, it is worthy to upgrade to Kindle 2.  Otherwise, just continue to enjoy Kindle 1 and wait for the Kindle 3

Kindle 2 is available now on amazon for $359
