Both Nikon D300 and Canon EOS 40D are great DSLRs with live LCD viewer. Which one should you buy? I did a research on the web and found a couple of articles which gave a direct comparison of the two cameras.

American Photo contributor Jonathan Barkey found the two cameras are closely matched, although D300 ($1800) is more than 50% more than EOS 40D ($1200) . D300 is a more advanced camera with better AF and Super LCD, has more advanced features such as active D-lighting, a sophisticated Scene Recognition System that improve AF, metering and white balance. But Canon EOS 40D is an excellent Camera in the things which count. In the end, D300 is the most advance camera and the EOS40D is the most bang on the buck!

Although it is not a real review, photolectic listed the specifications of 40D and D300 head to head which will give you a comparison of the two camera. From the table, D300 has much better LCD than 40D but most of other data are essentially the same.

May be the most important is the consideration of lens. If you already have a collection of Nikon or Canon lens, it will be good to stay with the same brand. If you are new to DSLR, I would suggest to go with Canon since Canon has more selections of lenses.
