How to connect MacBook to an external monitor was described in early post.  Unlike external monitors, most of the projectors were connected by VGA adapters.  In order to connect the new MacBook or MacBook pro to a projector, you need the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter.

  • Connect one end of your VGA cable to your projector and your Mini DisplayPort to the other end of the VGA cable.
  • Plug the Mini DisplayPort in your MacBook and adjust the display menu from system preference and you are all set!

It isn’t that simple. I have now run into problems with about half the projectors since I upgraded to Macbook with 10.5.8

I plug in the connector (yes, the correct one) and my screen goes blank. Can’t see the screen to pull up system preferences. Pushing F7 hasn’t worked. I have had AV guys figure it out, but I didn’t know what they did and by the time I got back they were gone. So there is a trick I don’t know. I’m a Macfreak – owned’em since 1984, so this isn’t an issue of unfamiliarity, just frustration …

I found that using a DVI to DVI cable solves the problem but presentations cannot use presenter tools. It works only in mirror mode. If anyone else has a better solution, I’d love to hear it!
